Icons, Symbols and Abbreviations

Icons

Most bookmarks are linked to a web page and will send your browser there when you double click on them. Job Pointer does, however, include other types of internet resources. The following table shows the icons you will see in the databases. tells you what each represents and what will happen when you double click it.

Web page Sends the bookmark's URL to the browser. If your browser is not open, JP will start it.
Usenet newsgroup Sends the newsgroup address to the default Windows newsreader client program. If your newsreader is not open, JP will start it. (Note: the newsreader may be part of your browser suite or work within your email program.)
Email address Opens a new message window in the Windows default email program and inserts the email address from the bookmark in the To: field. Will start your email program if it is not already open. (Note: your email program may be part of your browser suite.)
Gopher server Sends the bookmark's URL to the browser, which will display the file from the gopher server in its window. Will start your browser if it is not already open.
Telnet system Sends the telnet address from the bookmark to the Windows default telnet client program. If the telnet program is not already open, JP will start it. (Note: not all Windows systems include telnet clients.)
Locked You will only see this icon if you are using Job Pointer the free puppy. It tells you this bookmark can only be used by people who register their Pointer. To unlock all of the bookmarks in all of the databases, you need to buy the full-grown JP.

Symbols

Job Pointer uses special characters as symbols within bookmark names to give you additional information about the site:

~ A tilde before a bookmark or category means the page(s) are a collection of useful links (Hey, more bookmarks!). For example, ~Article Links from Shorter Work Time
* An asterisk within (usually after the main title) or at the end of a bookmark name indicates the Pointer thinks this is a particularly useful resource or excellent job search page, such as Job Hunters Bible:* Job Hunting Online.
[R] An "R" inside of brackets indicates that you must register to use the resource linked from this bookmark, like New York Times [R]
[$] A dollar sign inside of brackets means this resource is fee-based. It could be a subscription service or a one-time purchase but it will cost you money. For instance, Netshare (executive jobs) [$]
(Note: This symbol is not used for books, software and other items that are normally bought.)
-> This is the a pointer from the Pointer. It precedes special information about a specific resource, a tip about navigating, searching or how best use it. These appear only in the comments about some bookmarks.
